IN MEMORIAM: Professor SHIN-YONG KANG (1946-2007)

Professor Shin-Yong Kang passed away on 7 June 2007, just 1 week before his son's wedding. He was born on 22 September 1946 and grown up in Seoul, Korea. He graduated from College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University in 1970 and obtained Ph.D. from Seoul National University in 1983.

He began to study parasitology as a Teaching Assistant in Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1973. He became an instructor in 1979 and promoted to a Professor in the Department of Parasitology, College of Medicine, Chung-Ang University, and served there during his life time. He was a visiting scientist of Animal Parasitology Institute at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland, USA from 1987 to 1988. He studied on pathobiology of metagonimiasis, and also participated in researches on filariasis epidemiology on Jeju Island, serodiagnosis of paragonimiasis and cysticercosis, and molecular biology of parasitism.

Professor Kang was honored by receiving an Academic Award from The Korean Society for Parasitology in 1983 in recognition of his scientific achivements in histopathological studies on metagonimiasis. He served as the Vice President (1994-1997) and President (1998-1999) of The Korean Society for Parasitology. His memory leaves those who knew him with a sense of affection and great admiration. He will not be forgotten for his mentorship and achievements by those, both young and old, who follow him in the challenges of parasitology research.
